Baldur’s Gate 3: Every Playable Race – A Comprehensive Guide

In Baldur’s Gate 3, choosing your playable race is one of the most important things you can do when making a character. But this choice will only sometimes change how you feel about the story. All of the possible romances are bisexual, and most NPCs won’t say anything about your race, with a few exceptions.

Some races have unique skills, like seeing in the dark or doing magic. When making your choice, it’s important to know what makes each race different.

Characters within a race can have different subraces. Each race can choose its own stat bonuses instead of getting only ones for that race. This is different from Early Access.

Skill Proficiencies: Perception

  • Shortswords
  • Longbows
  • Shortbows

SPECIAL FEATURES

  • Darkvision up to 12 meters.
  • Advantage on saving throws against being “Charmed.”
  • No one can put them to sleep.

Subraces:

  • High Elves get to choose one Cantrip.
  • Wood Elves can move 1.5 times faster and are better at being stealthy.

The High Elf’s free Cantrip is a big plus since it lets them choose from many valuable spells like Blade Ward, Mage Hand, and Ray of Frost. This one can make ice surfaces that make enemies fall down.

Wood Elves are good at Stealth, which makes them a natural fit for sneaky classes like Rogue.

Tiefling

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • Darkvision up to 12 meters.
  • Fire will hurt you half as much.

Subraces:

  • The Produce Flame Cantrip is only available to subraces of Asmodeus Tieflings.
  • The Mage Hand Cantrip is for Mephistopheles Tieflings.
  • The Thaumaturgy Cantrip is for Zariel Tieflings.

Tieflings are immune to fire, which makes them suitable for tanking roles against enemies with fire elements or who use dangerous spells like Fireball.

3

Drow

  • Rapiers

  • Drow, called Lolth-Sworn, has red eyes that make other races afraid as soon as they see them.
  • Seldarine is not a Drow.

Suppose you want to explore the Underdark during your campaign. In that case, having a Drow with powerful Darkvision around can be very helpful.

4

Human

  • Shields

Equipment Proficiencies:

  • Battleaxes
  • Handaxes
  • Light Hammers
  • Warhammers

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • Darkvision up to 12 meters.
  • Poison save rolls are easier for you.

Subraces:

  • When they level up, Gold Dwarves gain more HP.
  • Shield Dwarves can use both light and medium armor well.
  • Duregar can see up to 24 meters instead of 12 in the dark, and they have an advantage on Saves against being charmed or paralyzed.

Gold Dwarves do well as Clerics and Druids because they can stay alive longer, which makes up for their lower-hit dice. Shield Dwarves are great for Fighters who are on the front line.

Half-Elf

  • Shields

SPECIAL FEATURES:

  • Darkvision up to 12 meters.
  • Advantage on saving throws against being “Charmed.”
  • No one can put them to sleep.

Subraces:

  • High Half-Elves can choose a Cantrip to use.
  • Wood Half-Elves can move faster and become better at sneaking around.
  • The Dancing Lights Cantrip is for Drow Half-Elves.

The free Cantrip is just as useful for High Half-Elves as it is for High Elves with no half-elf blood (see above). As Rogues and Bards, Wood Half-Elves are very good.

Choose Drow if you want to look good and play a role, but Dancing Lights isn’t perfect.

8

Halfling

Special Features:

  • You get a bonus on your saves against being scared.
  • If you roll a 1 on an Attack Roll, a Save Roll, or an Ability Check, you must roll again and take the second result.

Subraces:

  • Halflings who are Lightfoot have an advantage on Stealth checks and are good at it.
  • Halflings with the Strongheart trait have an edge on their saves against poison.

Lightfoot Halflings might be a good fit for you if you like to play bad guys. But if you want to fight in the front lines, Strongheart Halflings are more durable and can do a great job in that role.

Due to their Intelligence bonus, Gnomes make great Wizards. When you choose a Rock Gnome, Constitution and History get a boost. Forest Gnomes can use the valuable “Speak with Animals” ability for free.

10

Dragonborn

Subraces:

Dragonborn can choose their ancestry, which changes the color of their scales and gives them elemental breath. They get stronger against their element.

  • Black and Copper Dragonborn have acid breath and are strong.
  • Blue and bronze Dragonborn can breathe and fight with lightning.
  • Brass, Gold, and Red Dragonborn can breathe fire and protect themselves from it.
